Photographers pay a lot for soft boxes: big, diffused lights that wrap around a face. A car windshield is basically one, pointed right at you. Light comes from a big area in front and a little above, so:
- shadows under your eyes get filled in,
- skin texture softens,

Side windows fill in the rest
The side windows add more light from the left and right, so there's barely any harsh shadow on either side of your face. Compare that to a bathroom where one bulb sits right above your head.

- Face a window, not with it beside or behind you.
- Indirect daylight is best. Cloudy days are perfect. If the sun is shining straight in, pull a thin curtain or step back.
- Turn off overhead lights so they don't add shadows from above.
- Phone at eye level or slightly above, arm fully out.
- Chin forward and slightly down, eyes to the lens.
At school, uni or work
- Stand facing the biggest window in the corridor or library.
